About Flavio Almeida
Flavio Almeida, based in Phoenix, AZ, is the Executive Director of Gracie Barra North America, the Regional Director of Gracie Barra Arizona, and Head Instructor of Gracie Barra in North Phoenix.
While training at Gracie Barra in the late 1990s and early 2000s, there wasn’t a conceivable career track for a Jiu-Jitsu instructor for Flavio. He was teaching a few classes per week and training full-time all while pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Economics. Shortly after finishing his degree in 2003, Flavio was hired to work as a project manager at the Brazilian Branch of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
Flavio found himself working as a consultant for major Brazilian and multi-national corporations such as Alco, BP, Praxair, Petrobras, Natura, and CVRD. This experience helped him understand the rationale behind big businesses and the very important role that they play in society. Flavio found himself fascinated by how their massive operations could hold so well together with thousands of people working under the same structure, processes, and vision.
In 2006, Flavio began to question his reasons behind his business career. While he was in a great position with enormous opportunity to grow both professionally and financially, Flavio simply could not connect himself with the path ahead of him. At this point, Flavio began to sorely miss Jiu-Jistu. At that point, Flavio’s brother offered him a job to teach at his Jiu-Jitsu academy in New Jersey. After about six months teaching at his brother’s school, Flavio had the opportunity to contribute to the business of his former instructor Master Carlos Gracie, Jr.
Flavio loves to see the growth that Gracie Barra instills in each one of its individual team members. At all levels of the organization, members are encouraged to embrace the challenge, welcome the unknown, and explore the new while staying rooted within their traditions and core values. They function as a team overcoming daily challenges to continue creating opportunities for the growth of each individual as well as the organization as a whole.
Flavio believes that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will continue to grow towards becoming the main preference for families who want to learn self-defense or are looking for an activity that can help while bringing the family together, helping them achieve better levels of fitness and reducing stress.
